What is the Norwegian Language Test?
The Norwegian Language Test A1–B2 is a standardized test that measures your proficiency in Norwegian. It is developed by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills and is used to document language skills for applications such as citizenship, permanent residence, or admission to higher education.
Test Structure
The test consists of four parts:
- Reading Test: Assesses your ability to understand written texts.
- Listening Test: Measures how well you comprehend spoken Norwegian.
- Writing Test: Evaluates your ability to express yourself in writing.
- Oral Test: Tests your speaking skills through conversation and presentation.
Choosing the Right Level
For the writing and oral tests, you must choose a level when registering:
- A1–A2
- A2–B1
- B1–B2
Note that you cannot achieve a higher result than the level you registered for on the writing test, but on the oral test, it is possible to attain a higher level than the one you signed up for.
Registration and Execution
You register via prove.hkdir.no. Tests are usually held four times a year. You can choose which parts to take and whether to do them all at once or separately.
Results and Appeals
Results are typically published a few weeks after the test. You will be notified via SMS or email. It is possible to appeal the results of the writing and oral tests.
Costs
Prices vary between municipalities, often ranging from NOK 400 to NOK 2,500. If you have the right and obligation to participate in Norwegian language training, you can take the test for free once.
